โžฑ LIFE AS A LANGUAGE TEACHER

๐Ÿ…  Who or what inspired you to start teaching?

โ’ถ โ€œIt was my friend and cousin. She said, โ€˜youโ€™re living in a foreign country, why not teach your own language?โ€™. My mum said โ€˜that suits you so wellโ€™; I was always helping my peers in school. Iโ€™m really happy when Iโ€™m teaching.โ€

๐Ÿ…  What prompted you to learn English?

โ’ถ โ€œWe learned English at school, but I was a very bad student and my levels were low. I couldnโ€™t speak much English, and I started from zero at TAFE, but moving here to Australia was the real opportunity to learn.โ€

๐Ÿ…  Have you studied anything other than linguistics?

โ’ถ โ€œYes, I have a diploma of pharmacy and I worked in that industry for 10 years.โ€

๐Ÿ… ย What is do you like most about teaching?

โ’ถ โ€œWhen people are happy, and they learn something โ€“ anything. That makes me so happy. When I make their day. When it โ€˜clicksโ€™.โ€

๐Ÿ…  What do you find is the most challenging thing about teaching?

โ’ถ โ€œSometimes itโ€™s the correct pronunciation. But I have a trick for that [laughing]. English and French have 70% in common, so sometimes students know the words, but itโ€™s the pronunciation that stands in the way.โ€

๐Ÿ…  What is your teaching motto or philosophy?

โ’ถ โ€œImmerse yourself.โ€

๐Ÿ…  Describe a successful lesson. Tell us why it would be successful.

โ’ถ โ€œWhen โ€˜it clicksโ€™, and I can see the studentsโ€™ eyes illuminate with excitement. And when they can reuse it for the next time around.โ€

๐Ÿ…  What is the next language that you want to learn, and why?

โ’ถ โ€œSpanish, because my sister is living in Cadiz, Spain. I would love to be able to speak a little bit when Iโ€™m over there. But I would also love to re-learn Italian. We learned it at school as a second language after English.โ€

โžฑ UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

๐Ÿ…  Where have you travelled?

โ’ถ โ€œDominican Republic, New Caledonia, New Zealand, a little bit of Italy (I used to live on the border), Spain, oh, and Belgium!โ€

๐Ÿ…  Do you have any hidden talents?

โ’ถ โ€œ[Laughing] surfing. It was my dream when I was a teenager. I always thought about it, and when we finally came to the Gold Coast that was what I did.โ€

๐Ÿ…  What is your favourite food?

โ’ถ โ€œLemon meringue โ€“ but when the lemon is not sweet, but citrusy.โ€

๐Ÿ…  How would you describe yourself in three words?

โ’ถ โ€œPassionate, social andโ€ฆ resilient.โ€

๐Ÿ…  If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?

โ’ถ โ€œA fish. I love the water!โ€

๐Ÿ…  Describe your perfect day. What would it look like?

โ’ถ โ€œTo take a plane and go see my parents and sister. Itโ€™s been 6 years.โ€

โžฑ LAST BUT NOT LEASTโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ…  What is one thing you want your students to remember about you?

โ’ถ โ€œMy smile [laughing]. My good nature.โ€
